I have been concerned about some basic things, lately.

Like, ho well I am doing in one of my courses.
Or how much people like me.
Or whether I am a good person.

Someone stole all my money, but really, things are going pretty well. Some things are starting to feel healthy again.

There is this great scene in Con Man between Jim Jarmusch and Johnny Depp.

It is freaking awesome.

"Jim and I are above. We're floating."

Now I just want to go watch a bunch of Jarmusch films.

Hell yes. This is at the top of my queue:

"May, Aeh, Tar and Pui are the hard-rocking stars of a popular all-girl band, but offstage they're a hard-hitting quartet on a quest to find a magical potion that will transform the tomboys into real men. Along the way they must face off against dwarfs, a gang of overweight women and a mob of vicious bandits. This Thai cult classic stars Alice Crystal, Katalina Gross, Marisa Seefah and Nunthayaporn Munthatatikul."

Request: Recipes?

  • Aug. 6th, 2008 at 9:18 AM

This mostly goes out to all the college-aged folks, but:

I'm compiling recipes for all the things I can make. I'm then using the lists of ingredients from those recipes to make this extra-cool grocery-list generator.

You guys, do you have recipes you love? Do you have recipes that are cheap? Tasty? Easy? Good in winter? Bad in winter?

Well, post away folks.

(None of you will do this, because who the fuck uses recipes? Damnation.)

Yes, I read effete, artsy pulp.

I mean, really, look at the authors I read most often: Kundera, Murakami, Kafka, Delillo, Stendhal, Nietzsche, Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Ibsen, Camus, Oë, Proust, Dazai, France, Thoreau? Not one of them is actually good. Sure, they all are a little bit crazy and they all have heady undertones, but that's it. Everything I read is the sort of thing that is supposed to be good, but isn't. The sort of thing that guys with penthouses and ex-girlfriends read while they smoke cigars and feel self-confident. Bleh.

But, you know, I'm pretty much okay with that. I'm not one of those guys, right? I mean, I don't even own a leather jacket. I'm not doing myself any favors reading this tripe, but, you know, it would be hard to function if you didn't read Nabokov.

My problem is that I can't quite point to good literature. I don't even know how you could measure it. Obviously, there are novels that everyone reads and are popular because English teachers force them into peoples' heads. There are other novels that are little bit licentious, a little bit lewd, a little bit philosophical that get passed around like sexually transmitted diseases. There are the books that critics like, there are classics that no one likes, there are a million strange and out of the ordinary books that only a handful of people even know about. None of those are good books.

I think I am looking for literature to do something that it doesn't do.

I don't know, sometimes I think the only decent thing in the world is Winne-the-Pooh. Other times I don't give a damn.

Maybe I am looking for suggestions. What have you read recently? What is good? What is bad?

My, uh, booklist )

There's a job to do and no one's doing it.

If you watch six movies and drink two liters of rootbeer and munch a bunch of buns filled with "chlorophyl", you'll probably feel like I do: refreshed, happy, and kind of self-disgusted but not overly so.

People in pittsburgh don't say 'yinz' or 'n'at' nearly enough. Let's go, people.

here are some questions i had.

  • Jun. 6th, 2008 at 5:37 PM

you were s'posed to answer these, guys, come on.

where are the places that people know your name?

is anonymity comforting, distressing, or otherwise?

how often do you miss a dead person?

when was the last time something seemed magical?

is sex more interesting now that you are old?

how long can you hold your breath before you start hearing things?

what is your least favorite tea?

what is a lie that you tell to everyone?

what female singer makes you want to run until your lungs give out?

do you ever think your friends are all lying to you?

how do you abuse others?

do you laugh when you are nervous? are you nervous because you laugh?

are you missing pieces of your body?

what is beauty?

how often to you cry over important things?

of all the things you have killed, which was your most favorite?

do you drink things from styrofoam cups?

does music reduced to 1/24 of the original speed turn you on?

do you get embarrassed over weird things?

what is a score?

have you ever professed a faith or ideology? why?

what is the worst pain?

what is the best pain?

if you died, would it matter who gave the eulogy?

of all the kids in 4th grade, who would you have liked to have married the most?

are you a bigot or just a passionate nativist?

does relativity give you nightmares?

is there something about cooking that turns you on?

who has caused the most physical damage to your body?

how long has it been since you stopped believing?

what is anarchism?

describe the perfect beard.

what is something secret that you only do in autumn?

what secrets do you regret telling?

what's wrong with you?

There's this great scene in Cafe Lumiere.

The girl sits down on the floor with her back to the camera.

She stretches out her hands, trying to arouse Mew the cat.

Then she falls backward.

The cat gets up and walks around her in circles.

She just keeps murmuring, "Here Mew, Mew, Mew..."

Would you like to be happier?

  • Oct. 9th, 2007 at 12:45 PM

It's possible. While religion might be the most expedient answer and while neo-Kantianism might be the most lasting, nothing can beat the pure pleasure of an unexpected letter.

Which is why I'm extending the following opportunity, once again:

Comment with your address* and I'll find time within the next six months to send you some lengthy personal correspondence. You might even be the lucky winner of a homemade gift! Past winners have received books, a fork, and software. You could be next! Sign up today!

[And yes, even if you've given me your address before or you just naturally expect me to write to you, you should still comment. Because I'm compiling a list of addresses.]

*Comments screened - I won't release your address

I'm rather pleased with things and myself.
